Best Exercises for Knee Pain Relief

Knee pain is one of the most common complaints among adults. With proper exercises and guidance, most knee pain can be managed effectively at home.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

  • Osteoarthritis - wear and tear of joint cartilage
  • Ligament injuries - damage to ACL, MCL, or other ligaments
  • Meniscus tears - cartilage cushion damage inside the knee
  • Patellar tendinitis - inflammation of the kneecap tendon
  • Bursitis - inflammation of fluid-filled sacs near the knee

5 Effective Exercises for Knee Pain Relief

Start with lower repetitions and gradually increase intensity. Stop immediately if you experience sharp pain.

1. Straight Leg Raises

Strengthens the quadriceps without stressing the knee joint. Lie on your back with one leg bent. Raise the straight leg 12 inches off the ground. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times on each side.

2. Hamstring Curls

Builds hamstring strength to support the knee. Stand holding a chair for balance. Bend your knee, bringing your heel toward your buttocks. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times on each side.

3. Wall Squats

Safely builds quadriceps and glute strength. Stand with your back against a wall. Slide down until knees are at 30-45 degrees. Hold for 5-10 seconds and repeat 10 times.

4. Step-Ups

Improves functional strength and balance. Step up onto a sturdy step or stair with one foot, then bring the other foot up. Step down and repeat. Start low and gradually increase height.

5. Calf Raises

Strengthens calves to support knee stability. Stand on a flat surface holding a chair if needed. Rise up on your toes, hold for 3 seconds, then lower. Repeat 15-20 times.

Safety Guidelines

  • Warm up for 5-10 minutes before exercising
  • Increase intensity gradually over several weeks
  • Stop if you experience sharp pain
  • Perform exercises consistently every day
  • Focus on proper form, not repetitions

When to See a Physiotherapist

  • Pain persists for more than a few weeks
  • You experience swelling, instability, or locking
  • Pain severely affects daily activities
  • You're recovering from surgery
  • Pain is severe or progressively worsening
